At Discovery Kids Playschool, our students thrive through play-based activities that foster creative expression, sensory enrichment, naturalistic exploration, and social-emotional engagement. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, we value creativity, self-expression, and a strong sense of community. Social-emotional development is integral to our learning, supported by therapist-guided “nurture groups” that focus on mindfulness, self-regulation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.

Our Approach

Creative Expression

Creative expression is a vital component of early childhood education because it supports the whole child—cognitively, emotionally, socially, and physically. Through art, music, movement, dramatic play, and open-ended materials, young children explore ideas, communicate feelings, and make sense of their experiences in ways that go beyond words. Creative expression honors play as a child’s primary work, allowing children to experiment, problem-solve, and take risks in a safe and meaningful way. It fosters curiosity, resilience, and confidence while supporting emerging skills such as self-regulation, collaboration, and flexible thinking. When children are given the freedom to create, they are empowered to express their unique perspectives and build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Naturalistic Exploration

Naturalistic exploration enriches early childhood learning by inviting children to engage directly with the world around them through open-ended, hands-on experiences. By interacting with natural materials such as rocks, water, plants, light, and loose parts, children observe, question, and experiment in ways that are self-directed and meaningful. These experiences encourage curiosity and wonder while supporting scientific thinking, sensory integration, and problem-solving skills. Open-ended exploration in natural environments allows children to follow their interests, test ideas, and construct knowledge at their own pace, fostering a deep sense of connection to their environment and reinforcing the understanding that learning is an active, evolving process rooted in discovery.

Sensory Enrichment

Sensory enrichment is a foundational element of early childhood education, as young children learn best through experiences that engage all five senses—touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste. Rich sensory opportunities such as exploring varied textures, listening to natural and musical sounds, observing light and color, engaging with scents, and tasting new foods support children in organizing and interpreting information from their environment. These multisensory experiences do more than spark curiosity; they actively contribute to neurological development by strengthening existing neural pathways and promoting the formation of new synapses in the brain. As children interact with diverse sensory inputs, their brains build the connections necessary for learning, memory, emotional regulation, and higher-level thinking, creating a strong neurological foundation for future growth and development.

Social-Emotional Engagement

Social-emotional engagement is the heart of a truly strong and effective education system—it is not an add-on, but the foundation upon which all learning is built. When children feel physically safe, emotionally secure, and deeply connected to the adults and peers around them, their brains are free to explore, grow, and learn. Research and developmental theory consistently show that the hierarchy of needs must be met first: without safety, trust, and a sense of belonging, a child’s brain remains focused on survival rather than learning. Meaningful relationships, responsive caregiving, and emotionally supportive environments calm the nervous system and open the door for curiosity, problem-solving, and academic growth. When we prioritize social-emotional development, we create the conditions where children don’t just memorize information—they truly absorb, integrate, and thrive in their learning.
